Bear Activity Advisory For Mc Bride Inlet Area

This notice is to inform visitors of recent bear activity at McBride Inlet, in the East Arm of Glacier Bay.On July 13^th the National Park Service received a report that a black bear had obtained food from kayakers camped on the North shore of McBride Inlet.The kayakers reported that they observed a black bear leaving the area where they had stored their food containers. They found the container lid, but the container and food contents were missing.

Visitors are reminded that bears are curious and will play with and investigate items that are unique to them. Bear Resistant Food Containers, provided at the Visitor Information Station (VIS), have proven to stand up to a bear's manipulation and chewing.It is believed that in this case the lid was improperly placed on the container, allowing the bear easy access to the contents.The National Park Service also reccomends that visitorstravel in groups of 2-4 or more, make noise, carry bear spray, and never yield ground, food, gear, or fish, to bears.Please report all bear encounters to the  park's Visitor Information Station (907-697-2627). Visitors may also get the most current information on park bear activity at the VIS.
