Second System Fortifications at Gateway

Many of the forts in Gateway were begun in the early 1800s. They were Second System Fortifications, and instrumental in defending NYC.
Third System Fortifications at Gateway

Fort Richmond, now known as Battery Weed, is an excellent example of third system forts, which were built between 1817 and 1867.
Endicott System Fortification at Gateway

The Endicott system was constructed from 1890-1910. Several forts at Sandy Hook and Fort Wadsworth are from this era.
New York Harbor Defenses 1907-1945

Newer weapons and technology supplemented Endicott defenses to protect New York City through World War II.
Cold War at Gateway

Both Fort Tilden and Sandy Hook were home to Nike missiles during the Cold War.
