Explore the Fort's History

Welcome to Fort Larned’s page just for kids. We want to make learning about the fort, the Santa Fe Trail and the Plains Indians fun.

Fort Larned was established to protect mail and other travelers on the Santa Fe Trail. The Santa Fe Trail was a trade route from Independence, Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico. It went through the lands of several Plains Indian tribes. Those tribes were the Cheyenne, Arapaho, Kiowa, Plains Apache and Comanche.

The Santa Fe Trail brought a lot of cultures together at Fort Larned. There were European and American soldiers in the Army, African American Buffalo Soldiers and Hispanic and American traders on the Santa Fe Trail. And, of course, the Indian tribes in the area.

Come and explore all the different history at Fort Larned!
