SHANKSVILLE, PA: Flight 93 National Memorial will celebrate the 96th birthday of the National Park Service with kid-friendly programming on Saturday, August 25 during Founder's Day. Children will have the opportunity to learn more about the memorial and the story of Flight 93 through a hands-on "Touch-Table," to make a tribute, and become a Junior Ranger by completing additional children's activities. This free, family-friendly experience will be offered between 10:00 AM to 4 PM. To plan your visit, check the park website at www.nps.gov/flni/planyourvisit.
"Birthdays are a time to celebrate, and we want everyone, especially children, to join the party," said Superintendent Jeff Reinbold. "National parks belong to all Americans and offer something for everyone." The National Parks in Western Pennsylvania will also be observing the National Park Service birthday by holding special children's activities and programs at Fort Necessity National Battlefield, Friendship Hill National Historical Site and Johnstown Flood National Memorial.
On August 25, 1916, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act, establishing the National Park Service "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and wildlife therein…for the enjoyment of future generations." Today there are 397 units within the National Park System, located throughout the United States and its Territories, providing places to learn and have fun. If you want to share birthday wishes, stories, photos, or video from a trip to your favorite park, the National Park Foundation has created a birthday website www.NPSbirthday.org to get the celebration going!
The mission of the National Park Service extends beyond parks into communities across the country where we work with partners to help preserve local history and create close-to-home recreational opportunities that revitalize neighborhoods and enhance the quality of life.
