Summary: Examine some of the common plants of Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and the ways in which these plants fit into the surrounding environment. Fee is $50. Teacher credit available. Registration required. Call 719-748-3253.

Details: The distribution of plants is determined by a wide variety of factors including climate, soils and human impact. In this course the participants will be able to examine some of the common plants at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument and to see how those plants fit into the environmental variability of the monument and its surrounding area. The monument is located in the montane life zone which has certain characteristics found throughout the state as well as some unique features associated with the geographic position of the monument. The morning will be spent talking about environmental factors and the characteristics of common plants. The afternoon portion of the course will be field- oriented. This course will be a great source of information that can be used in the classroom or in fieldtrips. The class is sponsored by the Colorado Geographic Alliance.
