Special Activities Planned at Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument in February

Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument is open year round. During the month of February the Monument is open every day of the week from 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM.  Here are some other activities taking place during the month:

Saturday, February 18, Great Backyard Bird Count
The Friends of Florissant Fossil Beds along with Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument will host the 20th annual Great Backyard Bird Count on Saturday, February 18, from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way for people of all ages and backgrounds to connect with nature and make a difference for birds. Counting birds is a fun, family friendly way to discover and help the birds in your community and take part in a nationwide science project.

There will be three opportunities to count birds. The times are 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM, or 11:00AM. You may participate in one or all if you would like. Meet at the visitor center.  There will also be other hands on activities and crafts also taking place throughout the day near the visitor center.

Monday, February 20. Presidents’ Day, Fee FREE Day and Ranger Guided Hike
In honor of Presidents Day the Monument, as well as the other 417 national park units, will offer free admission. Join a ranger for a guided 2 – 3 mile hike at 10:00 AM. Meet at the visitor center. Dress in layers with appropriate foot gear for conditions.

Friday, February 24, Night Sky Program, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. Join park staff and members of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society to gaze at the dark skies above Florissant Fossil Beds in search of planets, galaxies, nebulas, and more. Meet at the visitor center.

There are no additional fees for any park programs beyond the daily entrance fee. Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument offers 15 miles of beautiful, yet lesser known, hiking trails to explore, a free Junior Ranger Program, three short self-guided trails, a park video and museum exhibits, and bookstore.
