To ensure visitor safety, the East Everglades Area of Everglades National Park will be temporarily closed to all access from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily, effective immediately. The closure encompasses all East Everglades land and facilities administered by Everglades National Park that are accessible by SW 168 Street and/or SW 237 Avenue in Miami, Florida. This closure is being enacted to ensure visitor safety following recent acts of vandalism, illegal dumping and environmental damage, rendering National Park Service facilities unsafe for visitors.

According to Superintendent Pedro Ramos, “The East Everglades Area includes the popular Chekika day-use area, which was closed due to lack of funding in 2013. We plan to reopen Chekika in 2016; however, the infrastructure has been rendered unsafe by recent vandalism, which has taken a serious toll in this area. This temporary closure will facilitate the reopening of Chekika in 2016 when the infrastructure is safe and visitors can have a quality experience.”

The National Park Service is working in coordination with Miami-Dade County to ensure visitor and public safety in the area.
