Everglades and Dry Tortugas National Parks continue to monitor the progress of Hurricane Ike. Both parks have now completed preparations for the storm. Based upon the best available information, managers will conduct day-by-day assessments to guide park operations going forward. Current storm predictions continue to forecast probable impacts to the Dry Tortugas. Consequently, the park will remain closed until conditions permit. Recent trends in forecast tracks suggest more favorable conditions may be possible for Everglades National Park. Consequently, park managers will open some areas of Everglades for visitation on Monday, September 8. The main park road will open to visitor access beginning at 5:00 a.m., the Gulf Coast Visitor Center will open at 8:15 a.m., and the Shark Valley Visitor Area will open at 8:30 a.m. All areas are expected to operate through normal business hours, though some concession services may be interrupted. Over the next few days, access to visitor areas may continue to change pursuant to expected conditions. Visitors are advised to call ahead for the latest information on park status and operations at 305-242-7700. -EVER- |
