Superintendent Dan Kimball is pleased to announce the launch of the park’s newly expanded podcast program. “By creating a series of informational and interpretive podcasts, Everglades National Park is providing new ways for visitors to learn about a special place they might not ever visit, but still want to enjoy.” says Kimball. Not only are these podcasts designed to be viewed at home, but visitors can take the podcasts with them to the park on their own portable digital media players and learn more about a unique bird or trail they might see right in front of them. Starting this winter, a new podcast episode will be released each month on the park’s official website. The public can download and view a variety of original podcasts written, created and produced by park rangers. All of these podcasts are also available on the iTunes website. Anyone can subscribe to and automatically download for free these podcasts as they are published. Everglades National Park will have several different podcast series that will feature different aspects, or themes about the park. Virtual visitors can look forward to the following three podcast series unfolding over the coming months: 1) Informational podcasts about visitor facilities, trails, and services around the park. This series is designed to help visitors plan their park visit, and highlight key areas and activities available in different areas around the park. 2) Interpretive podcasts highlight the natural history of the area. Here rangers share stories about some of the remarkable creatures, like endangered woodstorks, or shy crocodiles that live in the Everglades. 3) Productions funded and created by park partners in cooperation with Everglades National Park. Online visitors can view the official orientation movie River of Life shown at the Ernest Coe Visitor Center, and episodes of the Waterways series that highlights environmental issues of coastal south Florida. If you’d like to journey to the Everglades, but can’t get away from home or wish you could have your own park ranger to show you around the “River of Grass” as you walk the trails, then let Everglades National Park’s podcasting program be a part of your next park experience. Funding for the podcast program was made possible by a generous donation from the South Florida National Parks Trust which paid for new production equipment and staff training. A seasonal ranger position dedicated to developing the podcasting program was funded through the National Park Service (NPS) Centennial Initiative (https://www.nps.gov/2016/). This NPS initiative provides funds to hire additional seasonal employees for new and existing national park programs. This is part of a nationwide drive to increase staffing levels for the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary in 2016. In the future, new podcast series may include podcasts for children and educators, a series on cultural resources, and podcasts in Spanish.
