The "Everglades Mountains and Valleys"video series, viewable at on the park's website atwww.nps.gov/ever/ photosmultimedia/ mountainsandvalleys.htmand on YouTube, was written and produced by videographer Jennifer Brown and the park's environmental education staff.
Each video in the series features a specific habitat in Everglades National Park (tropical hardwood hammock, pine rockland, sawgrass prairie, cypress dome, slough, mangrove, and Florida Bay). Each video was filmed on location and narrated by a different park ranger. The videos explain the unique characteristics of each habitat ranging from the plants and animals that live there to the changes in elevation and water that create the "mountains and valleys" landscape of the Everglades. Serving as an excellent introduction to the many Everglades habitats, the series also serves as an appropriate teaching aid for classes of any age group, or anyone anticipating a trip to the Everglades.
For the contest, the park is seeking lesson plans to complement the, "Everglades Mountains and Valleys"video series. The contest is being held from February 1 to March 1, 2013. The contest is open to all educators and applicants may submit more than one entry. All applicants will receive a DVD of the video series and a $10 gift certificate to the Everglades Association bookstores. Prizes will be awarded for winning entries and will include an annual park pass to the Everglades, their first choice of a program date for the 2013-14 school year, a pizza party for their class, or a classroom presentation by a ranger from the video series.
