Everglades City, Fla. --- On Saturday, March 18, 2017, visit Everglades National Park's Gulf Coast Visitor Center to enjoy Calusa Days, a celebration of how these fascinating islands have shaped lives in the region over the centuries.
From 10am-3pm, enjoy engaging demonstrations, fun activities, and riveting storytelling at this free, family friendly outdoor event that explores the history and cultures of the Gulf Coast region's Ten Thousand Islands!
Highlights include:
- Local Historian Marya Repko speaks on "Saving the Swamp" at 1pm, under the pavilion at the Gulf Coast Visitor Center.
- Big Cypress National Preserve, Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve, Collier Seminole State Park, as well as Florida Public Archaeology Network will host discovery booths.
- Everglades National Park Rangers will host activities and games on:
- How In The Heck Can You Navigate When Surrounded By Over Ten Thousand Islands?
- Farming-what in the world can grow on an Island?
- Are All Islands The Same? Come Learn More about Islands and Why the Ten Thousand Islands Are So Special!
- What's In A Story? -- a Ranger Florida Short Story Read Out Loud.
The Gulf Coast Visitor Center is located at 815 Oyster Bar Lane, Everglades City, Florida 34149. Follow the brown park signs from US 41 (Tamiami Trail) into Everglades City to the Center. For more information about Everglades National Park visit nps.gov/ever.
