HOMESTEAD, Florida - Everglades National Park commemorates the loss of 43 people who perished 50 years ago today when Flight 703 broke apart mid-air due to severe weather and crashed in a remote area of Everglades National Park. Lost in the accident were 35 passengers and 8 crew members, who are remembered this day by the loved ones they left behind and the people who care for Everglades National Park. Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 705 was a scheduled passenger flight operated on February 12, 1963 by a Boeing 720 aircraft that took off from Miami International Airport, flew into a severe thunderstorm, and crashed into the Everglades. The plane was destined to Portland, Oregon, via Chicago, Spokane, and Seattle.
