Residents of northeast Wyoming and all park visitors are invited to enjoy music and a picnic in honor of history, family, and tradition. The Old Settlers’ Picnic is on Sunday, June 23. The festivities will begin at 12:30 p.m. at the picnic area at Devils Tower National Monument.

The people who originally settled the towns and ranches of this area were known as the Old Settlers. They began holding gatherings at the Tower during the 1890s, and the first official Old Settlers’ Picnic was in 1932. Within a few years 4,500 people were attending the annual event. Today, the Old Settlers’ Picnic remains an opportunity to gather and recognize the original pioneers of this unique era.

The event is organized by the Devils Tower Natural History Association (DTNHA). “We are so honored to host this picnic each year,” says Sandra Mooney, Executive Director of DTNHA. “One of the best things is listening and learning the stories of the founders of this community.” Each year the Association honors different, distinguished members of the local population. This year’s honorees are Mae Neiman, Mary Barbour, and Ted and Betty Wilson.

Buffalo Bill Boycott and Doctor Jo will present their unique performance of Wyoming and western history. Buffalo Bill is a storyteller-musician and world-class yodeler. His performance shares the legacy of Wyoming and its cowboy culture. Using guitar, banjo, mandolin, and voice, this musician brings a vibrant and entertaining style to classic Western legends. Doctor Jo performed as a strolling minstrel for years, on vocals, banjo, and guitar. They’ve been sharing their spirited western stories with the public for 11 years.

Bring your favorite picnic lunch and beverage and enjoy an afternoon with family and friends. There will be cake, ice cream, and activities for all ages.

The Old Settlers’ Picnic is sponsored by DTNHA and Devils Tower National Monument. There will be free entrance into the monument on Sunday, June 23. All programs are free of charge.
