Devils Tower, WY -Devils Tower National Monument Superintendent, Dorothy FireCloud has ordered a total fire ban within the boundaries of the monument, effective Tuesday, March 20, 2012 at 12:00 p.m., until further notice. This ban is pursuant to Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations, Section 2.13(c), all lands within the boundaries of Devils Tower National Monument are subject to a total fire ban when the superintendent determines it necessary.

Campfires, including charcoal briquette fires, are not permitted within Devils Tower National Monument under this ban. However, use of petroleum-fueled stoves, grills, lanterns, and heating devices is still permitted within the developed campground and picnic area, provided such devices meet the fire underwriters' specifications for safety. Smoking is permitted only at developed areas within 20 feet of an established ash receptacle or fire grate, or inside an enclosed vehicle. Visitors are reminded to properly extinguish and dispose of all smoking materials in ashtrays and not to throw them out of vehicles. Smoking is not allowed on park trails at any time of the year. Fireworks are also prohibited within Devils Tower National Monument year-round.

Potentially severe fire danger is possible throughout Crook County, created by a heavy fuel load and expected dry conditions. This combination of conditions has the potential to create situations that would overextend the firefighting capability of local government. Therefore, this ban is necessary to ensure both the safety of visitors and neighbors and the protection of park resources. Persons violating this ban can be criminally charged and held liable for the cost of fire suppression. Report all fires to a park ranger at (307) 467-5283 or call 911.
