Devils Tower to Host Western Cultural Festival and Cowboy Poetry Festival

Devils Tower National Monument hosts the Western Cultural Festival on Saturday, August 31. Come join the fun in the picnic area at 12 noon as Ray Maple portrays Tom O'Day, a member of the infamous Hole in the Wall gang and participated in a failed bank robbery attempt in Belle Fourche, South Dakota. Ray appeared in several movies filmed in Wyoming, "The Big Guns Talk", PAX "Butch and Sundance"; and documentaries on Buffalo Bill Cody and Old Trail Town. Maple, a former Deputy Sheriff and Police Chief is a working cowboy and rodeo cowboy. Jackie Maple, Ray's wife, portrays Bronco Nell, a colorful character from Wyoming's past.

The Cowboy Poetry Festival kicks off Sunday, September 1at 12 noon with Robert Dennis, Ken Cook, and Paul Larsen. Each cowboy brings their own unique western experiences to life every time they take the stage and present Cowboy Culture…South Dakota Style. Ken Cook is courageously ranching and writing poetry in South Dakota. In 2010, Ken was named Top Male Poet of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists. His passion for cowboy life and poetry comes alive on the stage and in person. Robert Dennis and his family work the ranch near Red Owl, South Dakota in much the same way his ancestors did, except for the luxury of a pickup truck. His admiration of good cowboys, stockmen, and horsemen rings true in his unique singing and songwriting. Robert Dennis and Ken Cook have performed at cowboy poetry and music gatherings across the west, including the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevada. Paul Larson's singing and songwriting, coupled with a rich baritone voice, are anchored to authentic cowboy music.

Both events will be held at the picnic area near the Belle Fourche River Campground.
