Permafrost Stories

Instead of being padded with snow, rough trails often last until January.

Permafrost isn’t just important to nature itself. Many Alaskans rely on intact permafrost to successfully carry out their day to day lives. The thawing of permafrost leads to many issues such as the degradation of roads, strenuous and dangerous travel conditions, melting ice cellars, loss of historical artifacts, increased flooding risk, and the erosion of land around homes. Many humans have written about and/or recorded the negative impacts of melting permafrost on their lifestyles.
