Deer and elk are using the road shoulders along U.S. Highway 50 as the snow recedes. Park rangers at Curecanti National Recreation Area report removing and dispatching many animals each week. These animals pose a serious crash risk with potential for property damage and personal injury. Please be aware of their presence; slow down and anticipate that they may step or jump into the road. Females are carrying fawns and calves right now – hitting one doe or cow causes two or three deaths!
