Southeastern Georgia can get hot, especially in summer! When it’s warm outside, you may need to adjust your activity level. To prevent overheating and more serious health risks be aware of the heat index during your visit. The heat index is a measure of how hot it actually feels when taking into account the humidity and temperature. The chart can help indicate how hot it will feel on a given day to you.

The following steps can help to make your visit a safe one:

*Slow down – Take frequent breaks in the shade. Do strenuous activities during the cooler times of the day.

*Dress appropriately – Lightweight, loose-fitting and light-colored clothing is best to reflect heat.

*Minimize direct exposure to the sun – Sunburn reduces your body’s ability to get rid of heat. Wear sunscreen and a hat.

*Drink plenty of water – Non-alcoholic and noncaffeinated drinks are best for hydration. Sip water throughout the day to stay hydrated.

*Take breaks in A/C – Cool down in air-conditioned areas to prevent getting overheated. Air conditioning is available at Sea Camp Ranger Station and the cooling room on the south side of the Ice House Museum at Dungeness Dock.

*Take cool showers – Sea Camp and Stafford Beach campgrounds have cold showers available for your use.

*Keep an eye on each other – Each person reacts differently to heat conditions. Some medications and medical conditions can make you more susceptible to heat illness. Check on others to assess how they are feeling throughout the day.
