How to Escape a Rip Current

NOAA

Swimming in the ocean is a fun activity on Cumberland Island. Water activities are done at your own risk as there are no lifeguards. Conditions vary with the weather and it's important to know the forecast for a safe trip to the ocean.

Strong winds can cause rip currents to form. A rip currant is a strong narrow current of water that moves directly away from the shore by cutting through the lines of breaking waves, like a river flowing out to sea. They are identified by calm water in the waves.

What to do if caught in a rip current?
-Don't panic
-Swim parallel to shore til you feel the current relax
-Wave for help
-Float on your back to conserve your energy

Best Practices for Ocean Sports

Always swim with a buddy.
Know the rip current risk. Ask a ranger.
Swim when conditions are suited to your swimming ability.
