Thunderstorms are common in the summer along the barrier islands, but can also occur at any other time of the year. Thunder is the sound created as the electrical discharge of lightning occurs, either between clouds or from a cloud to the ground and can indicate the distance of the storm.
A good general rule to follow is "when thunder roars, go indoors"! If you are close enough to hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck. It is also important to stay under cover for up to 30 minutes after hearing thunder.
In order of preference, good places to shelter while on the island are:
Fully enclosed building (available at Dungeness and Sea Camp Docks, as well as bathrooms at Sea Camp and Stafford Campgrounds, and Laundry House in Dungeness Historic District).
Group of Trees (avoid standing under solitary tall objects)
Low but exposed spot (like a depression in a field)
The worst place to be in a thunderstorm is on the beach- there is no shelter available. The majority of fatalities from lightning occur while doing outdoor sports, especially near water.
What's the difference between a watch and a warning?
Lightning strikes as the ferry approaches the St Marys dock.
