Historic Building Exterior: Storefronts

Incompatible New Storefront Design

Become familiar with the style of your building and the role of the storefront in the overall design.

This building’s storefront had been altered during the 1980s (above, left; historic view, below). One option would have been to design a new storefront reflecting the proportions and design of the historic storefront. But a new storefront was constructed that incorporates a series of inappropriate multi-light doors set between solid panels (above, right). This new storefront design does not take into account the basic elements of an early-20th century storefront with its large display windows, lower window panels and commercial entrance.
