Spring wildflowers are again bringing life and a splash of color to the lava landscape at Craters of the Moon. Timely spring rains and warmer temperatures are making late May and early June an ideal time to see the profusion of flowers along the monument's seven-mile loop road. "Rains since March have made up a bit of the moisture deficit from the dry winter we had," said Ted Stout, Chief of Interpretation and Education at the monument. Early-season bloomers like wild onion and desert parsley have peaked already, according to Stout. But the bulk of wildflowers – such as dwarf buckwheat and the pink carpets of dwarf monkeyflower -- are just getting started. "Although the main bloom is often over by late June, a variety of flowers spring to life throughout the summer months," said Stout. The elegant blazingstar as well as syringa, Idaho's state flower, are notable mid-summer flowers at the monument. "It puts one hundred of the monument's most common plants right at your fingertips," according to Stout.
