Ranger Guided Activities:

September 6, 13, 20, 26 and 27-Astronomy Presentations and Viewing: 8:30 p.m. - 9:15 p.m.

Some of the last dark skies in the country can be found in national parks, like Craters of the Moon, and the National Park Service is proud to share the beauty and wonder of the night sky. Join us for special astronomy presentations offered in the campground amphitheater followed by star gazing opportunities with our "Dark Ranger."

September 26-27 - Star Party: Begins at sunset

Experience the universe under the naturally dark skies of Craters of the Moon. Telescopes and expert viewing advice will be provided by members of the Idaho Falls Astronomical Society. Meet in the Caves Area parking lot and dress warmly.

September 27 –Wild Saturday
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, Monument staff are offering a variety of special events on National Public Lands Day. There will be free admission to the park that day and all events are free of charge except for the run.

Run the Rift Fun Run: 8 a.m.
Runners and walkers can choose from 5 and 10 kilometer routes around the scenic Loop Road. Sponsored by the Craters of the Moon Natural History Association this event is a fund raiser to help support field trips and educational programs at Craters of the Moon for Idaho school children. Receive a special t-shirt, water bottle and running bib by registering before September 19. Space is limited to the first 100 registrants. Register on-line at:

Wilderness Puppet Show:11 a.m. - noon;visitor center theater
Experience the antics of Idaho critters as they share A Song for Wilderness, presented by the Idaho Puppet Theatre.

Wilderness trail exhibit dedication:1:30 p.m.
Hike to the sign, located on the Wilderness Trail, for a ribbon cutting and short speeches near the boundary of the first Wilderness area in the National Park System. Featured speakers include Ethan Huffman from U.S. Representative Mike Simpson's office,B.S.U. professor John Freemuth, Wilderness Society spokesperson Rob Mason, and Lava Lake Ranch owner Brian Bean. 

Wilderness Film Festival: 3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act and National Public Lands Day by enjoying a selection of short films about wilderness.
