Wild Saturdays: Saturdays through August 30
Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act, rangers at Craters of the Moon are offering special programs to highlight some of the benefits and challenges of the Craters of the Moon Wilderness. Wilderness walks are limited to 12 participants. Reservations are available by calling 208-527-1335.
August 2 - Great Rift Expedition Presentation: 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. in the Visitor Center auditorium*
This spring 6 backpackers retraced the route of famed Idaho explorer Robert Limbert along the 52-mile long Great Rift. See pictures and hear stories about this fascinating expedition of endurance and discovery through Idaho's unique wilderness. Reservations are not required but seating space is limited to 32 people. Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium.
August 9- Full Moon Hike: 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.
Explore this unearthly wilderness under a full moon. Cooler temperatures make this moderate, 4-mile evening hike pleasant. Wear sturdy shoes and bring snacks, water, a flashlight, and a light jacket. Reservations are available by calling 208-527-1335. Meet at the Tree Molds Parking Lot.
August 16 - Managing Primitive Areas: 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Join the Superintendent for a visit to the first wilderness area in the National Park System and learn about the issues and challenges of managing wild areas with modern-day issues. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes. Meet at the Tree Molds Parking Lot.
August 23 - Evening Hike: 7 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Take advantage of cooler temperatures and softer light with this evening hike to Great Owl Cavern and the Tree Molds. This moderate 3 mile hike will involve some off-trail hiking and uneven terrain. Hiking boots, snacks, a flashlight, and water are required. Meet at the Tree Molds parking lot.
August 30 - Preserving Wilderness Character:9 a.m. - 11 a.m.
What makes wilderness wild? These and other questions about the characteristics of wilderness will be examined during a 1-2 hour hike on the two mile long Broken Top Loop Trail. The hike will be led by the park's Chief of Resource Management, a 35 year veteran of the National Park Service. Wear sturdy shoes and be ready for some moderately steep slopes. Meet at the Tree Molds parking lot.
August 25 – National Park Service Birthday
Happy birthday to us! Celebrate the 98th anniversary of the National Park Service with a visit to Idaho's largest national park unit. Entrance is free at all National Park Service sites on this day.
