The 2014 Superintendent's Compendium for Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve has been amended to prohibit the use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS, aka UAV, "drones") in all areas of the park, and to prohibit the use of electronic cigarettes ("vaping") in public buildings, offices, caves and the Lava Flow Campground Amphitheater.

"The unrestricted use of unmanned aircraft is incompatible with the mission to protect park resources and to ensure visitor enjoyment within the park," according to Superintendent Dan Buckley. He added, "all parks in the NPS System have been directed to address the use of unmanned aircraft in a consistent manner, and with the amendments to our Compendium, we are in compliance."

As for restrictions on where electronic cigarettes may not be used, he said "the secondhand effects of nicotine can be hazardous to some people and our employees, and until we understand the health effects better, it is prudent to not allow electronic cigarettes in public places, the same limitation we enforce for regular cigarettes."

Buckley adds that unmanned aircraft use is not permitted in any national park unless a Special Use Permit has been obtained from the park superintendent.
