Potomac, MD- The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) is proceeding with a limited reopening of the previously closed Olmsted Island Trail to the Great Falls Overlook late afternoon on Friday, July 7, 2017. The trail will be open for weekends only, through July to facilitate completion of several minor work items. Once all remaining items are completed the trail will be reopened for full access to the public every day of the week.
In the short term during the weekends, as well as upon full re-opening and completion, this project provides a safe, reliable, and enjoyable trail to view the Great Falls of the Potomac River. Restoration, repair and refinishing work includes bridge railing, decking and concrete foundation. The NPS recognizes the value of this trail and overlook to the public and appreciates their patience while we continue to complete this project.
