SULPHUR, Okla. — Chickasaw National Recreation Area staff will host the park’s annual Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 27, 2025. This volunteer event welcomes bird enthusiasts and community members of all experience levels to help count and identify winter species throughout the park. Participants will join park staff for a morning of guided birding, with instructions provided on bird identification and counting methods. Data collected during the event contributes to a nationwide effort coordinated by the National Audubon Society to monitor environmental effects on winter bird populations. Visitors should be prepared to spend most of the event outdoors and dress appropriately for winter weather conditions.

The Christmas Bird Count offers a unique opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, discover local wildlife, and support ongoing conservation efforts. Established in 1900, it is one of the world’s longest-running citizen science events that relies on dedicated volunteers to provide information about winter bird populations.
