Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Saturday, March 16, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will conduct a special 2-hour car caravan tour of Chickamauga Battlefield focusing on stories associated with African American resistance and rebellion connected to Chickamauga. This tour begins inside the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center.

Come participate in a tour exploring a part of the story of Chickamauga that is not often told - the desire for and the promise of freedom for enslaved African Americans. With Chattanooga falling into Union hands, the city became a beacon of freedom for thousands of enslaved men and women who saw an opportunity to escape the harsh reality of slavery. Suddenly, they were given a choice in their lives. Many African Americans enlisted as soldiers in the United States Colored Troops in order to destroy slavery, while others took the opportunity to support the Union army in other ways, all of which gave them hope, dignity, confidence and pride.  On the Chickamauga Battlefield there are thousands of stories, join this tour to learn about some of these tales of Resistance and Rebellion.
