Memorial Day Programs at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will commemorate the 150th Anniversary of Memorial Day with a series of special programs at Chickamauga Battlefield and at Lookout Mountain Battlefield, Saturday, May 26 – Monday, May 28. 

Saturday, May 26

At Chickamauga Battlefield, artillery programs will be conducted at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm and will take place at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. There will also be ranger-guided car caravan tours of the battlefield at 10 am and 2 pm. At Point Park, on Lookout Mountain, ranger-guided walking tours are scheduled for 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm, and living history presentations will take place at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm. At Cravens House, also on Lookout Mountain, a ranger will be available to lead guided tours of the historic home from 1 pm to 5 pm.   

Sunday, May 27

There will be a ranger-guided car caravan tour at 10 am, and at 2 pm, there will be a ranger-guided car caravan tour entitled “Above and Beyond the Call of Duty,” highlighting Medal of Honor Recipients at Chickamauga. These tours begin at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center. There will also be living history programs provided at Chickamauga Battlefield at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 
1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm. At Point Park, on Lookout Mountain, ranger-guided walking tours are scheduled for 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm, and living history presentations will take place at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and
3:30 pm. 

Monday, May 28

At Chickamauga Battlefield, there will be ranger-guided car caravan tours at 10 am and 2 pm. At Point Park, on Lookout Mountain, ranger-guided walking tours are scheduled for 11 am, 2 pm, and 4 pm, and living history presentations will take place at 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, and 3:30 pm.  

All programs at Chickamauga Battlefield are free of charge. Admission to Point Park is $7 per adult, ages 16 and over. Ages 15 and under are free. There are no admission fees at Cravens House. 

In May 1868, Union General John A. Logan, commander the Grand Army of the Republic, the largest organization of Union veterans, issued orders to the GAR to decorate the graves of their fallen comrades throughout the nation. This formalized a tradition that had begun earlier in communities throughout the nation. The holiday was known as Decoration Day, as served as a day to commemorate the Union soldiers who had given the last full measure of devotion during our nation’s Civil War. Over time, the holiday expanded to recognize all those who gave their lives in service to the nation throughout its history.
