Fort Oglethorpe, GA: Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special 1-hour program inside the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center on Saturday, June 29, at 11 am, focusing on James Walker’s famous painting, “The Battle of Lookout Mountain.”
It is amazing to hear visitors gasp when they walk into the Lookout Mountain Battlefield Visitor Center’s exhibition and are suddenly face-to-face with the enormous 13’ x 30’ canvas painting depicting the Battle of Lookout Mountain, paid for by US Major General Joseph Hooker in 1874. However, this painting was an enlarged copy of a smaller 1864 version commissioned by the US Army. This program will look at the similarities and the differences found in Walker’s works and how perception of events may have changed over time when memory, ego, and money came into play. We hope you will consider joining us as we explore the artistic views expressed in “The Battle of Lookout Mountain.”
