Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Saturday, June 15, at 10 a.m., Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will provide a 1-hour program to the site of Camp Contraband. This program begins at Outdoor Chattanooga, located at 200 River Street, Chattanooga TN.
After the Union army liberated Chattanooga thousands of African American refugees poured into the city in search of hope and a new life. But, with this new freedom came significant challenges. As camps sprang up around the city, especially on the north shore, disease and death were rampant. We hope you will join us as we explore this untold story of disease and death among the African American population in Chattanooga
Visitors may wish to bring a bottle of water and a folding chair since we will be in one location for the program.
