Thurmont, Md. – Catoctin Mountain Park plans to conduct emergency road repairs on Foxfield-Deerfield Road on Tuesday, April 9 and Thursday, April 11, 2024, between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Traffic will be limited to one-lane with full closures in place for short periods of time to allow maintenance workers to fill potholes and stabilize road shoulders. Park law enforcement will direct traffic to ensure the safety of workers and travelers.

With Route 77 closed for a sewer line repair since January, Foxfield-Deerfield Road has served as a detour for through traffic, tripling its normal use. According to Rick Slade, superintendent of Catoctin Mountain Park, “The additional traffic has caused the road surface to deteriorate quickly, making travel increasingly difficult and unsafe. Although temporary restrictions on the flow of traffic, including brief closures, will inconvenience drivers, we can’t wait until the detour is lifted to conduct these repairs. We ask drivers to remain patient and drive at a safe speed both during and after the repair work.”

The planned repairs are intended to serve as a temporary safety measure until more intensive repairs can be completed this summer. A complete rehabilitation of the road is planned for 2025.
