Flat Rock, NC – April is National Poetry Month. Carl Sandburg Home NHS will offer a variety of ways to celebrate and enjoy the art of poetry, including an art exhibit, a celebration of local and national student poetry contest winners, and a community reading of “The People, Yes.”
An exhibition of youth art titled, “Let a Joy Keep You,” is on display from April 1 to May 31, 2019. The exhibit title and inspiration comes from the first line of Carl Sandburg’s poem “Joy.” Each of the 71 canvases reflects how the young artists chose to interpret what joy means to them. Visitors can see the installation in a building adjacent to the Sandburg Home. Young artists are represented from across the country and locally, including students from Sugarloaf Elementary School in Hendersonville, NC.
Local and national Student Poetry Contest winners will be recognized at a Poetry Celebration and Award Ceremony on Friday, April 5, at 7:00 pm, at Blue Ridge Community College, Patton Room 150. Young poets in grades three through twelve from across the country submitted more than 200 poems. Awards include first through third place, honorable mention, and People’s Choice. Winning entries came from local students at Bruce Drysdale Elementary School and Mountain Community School (in Hendersonville, NC), and Carolina Day School (in Asheville, NC); as well as from students in Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Connecticut, and New Jersey.
A Community Reading of Carl Sandburg’s poem, “The People, Yes” will take place on April 27, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm at the amphitheater. “The People, Yes” is a book-length poem that lauds the perseverance of the American people in plain-spoken language. It references American history, culture, and common stories. The community is invited to read 5-minute segments of the poem throughout the day. You can sign up to read at www.nps.gov/carl/
