Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site will offer special programs during the park’s anniversary month in October.  Authorized on October 17, 1968, the park celebrates 53 years this fall.  A Community Poetry Reading will be held at the amphitheater on October 17, followed by a Sing-along. A virtual writing workshop will be hosted via Zoom on October 20.

On October 17, a Community Poetry Reading will start at 1:30pm, at the amphitheater. This is an audience participation event and will continue the reading of Carl Sandburg’s Pulitzer prize-winning “Complete Poems.” Visitors who want to participate can pick up a selection of poetry when they arrive at the amphitheater.

Following the poetry reading, Daniel Sage will lead a Sing-along from 3:00-4:30pm. Daniel Sage is a New York City singer, songwriter, and producer. He has performed at Carnegie Hall, the United Nations, Lincoln Center, and worked with Darius Rucker, Victor Wooten, Keb' Mo', sang with Carly Simon, and more. He loves singing and performing, especially when everyone sings along!

Due to COVID19 considerations, audience size will be limited to 100 visitors for the poetry reading and Sing-along. Please maintain social distancing from people not in your group.

On October 20, Filipino American poet Tony Robles will lead a virtual poetry workshop “Mabuhay Blue Ridge! Long Live the Poetic Landscape of its People,” from 7:00 – 9:00 pm.  During the workshop, Tony will celebrate Filipino American History month and share important works from Filipino American authors. Workshop participants will take part in writing exercises that will bring to life the voices of their culture to blend into a Blue Ridge poem that is as sweet as (how Filipino American author Bienvenido Santos writes), “the scent of apples.”

The writing workshop is hosted by the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara and will use Zoom for the virtual connection. Please visit the calendar of events page to sign up at https://www.nps.gov/carl/planyourvisit/calendar.htm.

Visitors can also find inspiration to write by following the national #WriteOut program from October 10-24. Park rangers and writers across the country will share videos, prompts, and fun writing tips. Follow us on Facebook to see the Sandburg park ranger prompts and links to other fun #WriteOut content.

Restrooms and a water bottle filling station are available near the main parking lot. Due to ongoing issues with a water pump, the restrooms and water bottle filling station near the Sandburg Home are closed, however portable toilets are available nearby. Visitors are asked to bring their own drinking water.

Park grounds and trails are open sunrise to sunset. The park store and visitor information area are open Wednesday through Sunday, from 10 am to 3 pm, in the garage behind the Sandburg Home. Outdoor access to the goats (in the barnyard and goat pasture) is from 10 am to 3pm daily. The Sandburg Home and house tours remain closed, due to ventilation concerns in the 183-year-old house.

To promote our staff and visitors’ safety, masks are required in all NPS buildings and on all forms of enclosed public transportation, regardless of location or vaccination status. Additionally, masks must be worn in outdoor spaces where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, located in Flat Rock, NC, is open from 9 am to 5 pm daily, except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day. Due to COVID-19, some visitor services are limited. For park updates and all parking options visit www.nps.gov/carl
