By September 4, work will begin on a small gravel “hikers” parking lot near the park’s administrative offices. Work will occur on weekdays and occasional Saturdays and be completed in October, in time for the fall hiking season.
The new lot is located on Little River Road, 1/3 mile from the main visitor parking lot. Signs will direct drivers to the new parking lot.
The main visitor lot will remain the primary parking area for visitors who wish to go on house tours, visit the bookstore, see the goats, or need assistance in accessing the grounds. The new gravel lot will offer an additional 24 parking spaces and is ideal for trail hikers and people who wish to explore park grounds on foot.
Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, authorized on October 17, 1968, is a unit of the National Park Service and celebrates its 50th Anniversary this year. The park is located three miles south of Hendersonville off U.S. 225 on Little River Road, and is open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., daily except Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
