TITUSVILLE, Fla. — Starting Feb. 11, the National Park Service invites the public to comment on Canaveral National Seashore’s draft adaptive management plan addressing changing shoreline conditions for the Playalinda District. The public comment period will be open until March 13.

There will be opportunities to submit written comments and participate in public meetings related to early management and development concepts. An informational newsletter describing the preliminary concepts is available for review at parkplanning.nps.gov/playalinda-plan.

“We are pleased to offer these opportunities for the public to provide early input on the future of the seashore’s management,” said Carmen Thomson, superintendent of Canaveral National Seashore. “In recent years, the Playalinda District has faced repeated erosion, storm damage and temporary closures that have affected public access, operations and the park’s budget. We have been working to identify actions that support sustainable access and improve the visitor experience, and now we need feedback from our visitors and stakeholders. This input helps us understand whether we are on the right track and where adjustments may be needed.”

The NPS will host two inperson public meetings. The first meeting will be held at the New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, on March 2 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The second meeting will be at the Titusville Public Library, on March 4 from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.

NPS will also host a virtual meeting on February 26 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Details and the meeting link are available at parkplanning.nps.gov/playalinda-plan.

NPS staff will outline the planning process, present the initial concepts, explain how to submit comments and answer questions. All meetings will feature the same presentation, and attendees are encouraged to choose the time most convenient for

them. Written comments may be submitted online by visiting parkplanning.nps.gov/playalinda-plan, selecting “Open for Comment” and choosing “Preliminary Concepts Newsletter.” Comments may also be mailed to:

About the Playalinda District Storm Adaptive Management Plan

The Playalinda District Storm Adaptive Management Plan will guide how Canaveral National Seashore prepares for stronger storms, rising visitation and growing launch activity along Florida’s Space Coast. After recent hurricanes destroyed dunes, flooded roads and damaged visitor facilities, the NPS is developing a longterm strategy to decide which infrastructure should be repaired, redesigned or removed, while protecting sensitive habitats like sea turtle nesting areas. The plan will explore safer and more resilient options for roads, parking, boardwalks, beach access and visitor services. The plan will also address accessibility, daily operations and coordination with partners such as NASA. Ultimately, the plan will outline a unified vision for how visitors can continue to enjoy Playalinda Beach while ensuring the district’s natural and cultural resources are protected in an increasingly dynamic coastal environment.
