Cape Hatteras National Seashore is home to some of the best surfing on the east coast. Due to the offshore shoals and dynamic ocean currents, there is an incredible diversity to the type of waves you can find at the park. Everything from the most challenging waves to perfect beginner swells, you can find it all at Cape Hatteras National Seashore. Typically, Ocracoke and Bodie Islands are great beaches for beginners, or places to build your skills. Hatteras Island tends to be the most diverse and challenging surf in the area. Consider visiting one of the many surf shops located throughout the local communities for insight from the experts.

Each year, professional surfers from around the world flock to Old Lighthouse Beach in Buxton, NC for the annual surf tournament at the spot where eastcoast professional surfing was born. Whether you are a seasoned surfer or not, Old Lighthouse beach is the best spot to watch surfers in action.
