Outer Banks Group Acting Superintendent Kym Hall is pleased to announce the September 11th opening of the newly constructed Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Ramp 25, located south of the village of Salvo and north of the village of Avon."While the adjacent paved parking area for the boardwalk is not fully complete yet, we made the opening of the new ORV ramp a priority to offer beach access for our local residents and park visitors," stated Acting Superintendent Hall. The opening coincides with the beginning of the Seashore's fall fishing season. The paved parking area will be added to provide additional pedestrian access, as well as improved access for visitors with disabilities, to Cape Hatteras National Seashore.Ramp 25 is the first of several such beach access projects planned for the Seashore's future.

In March 2012, as a secondary planning effort to the ORV Management Plan/EIS, an environmental assessment was conducted to evaluate the impacts for potential developed areas within the National Seashore to increase public access to the beaches. The proposed action gave consideration to 15 parking areas, one paved and two unpaved roads, five ORV ramps, five foot paths, 11 ADA accessible boardwalks, and the elevation of an existing flood-prone road section.

These proposed developments would:

·facilitate visitor access along the Seashore

·provide a variety of visitor use experiences

·provide a satisfying visitor experience throughout the Seashore for all visitors consistent with the purpose for which the park was established

·ensure that future and current roads, ORV ramps, foot trails, boardwalks, and parking areas promote the safety of all visitors

·minimize conflicts between different types of recreation users

·protect the Seashore's natural, cultural, scenic, and aesthetic values
