The National Park Service Outer Banks Group Know Your Park citizen science program series continues with two presentations this fall-one on sharks and the second on WWII shipwrecks. The first presentation, on sharks, will be on Monday, October 29 at 7 p.m. at the Fessenden Center activity room in Buxton, NC and at the Ocracoke Community Center on Friday, November 2 at 7 p.m. Sharks are fascinating predators worthy of our respect and admiration! Come learn about our local sharks-their adaptations to life in the sea and the reasons why we need sharks in our oceans. Rhana Paris, from the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island, will provide a lecture on sharks followed by an opportunity to closely observe various shark artifacts. The program is free and will last approximately one hour. Paris is the Outreach Coordinator at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island. She has been an interpreter/naturalist on the Outer Banks for the last 25 years with a total of eight years at the NC Aquarium. She received a BS in Biology from VA Tech, MS in Environmental Science from SUNY-Syracuse and an MA in Science Education from LSU. The second Know Your Park series features WWII shipwrecks and the presentation begins on Monday, November 19 at 7 p.m. at the Fessenden Center Activity Room in Buxton, NC and Tuesday, November 20, 2012 at 7 p.m. at the Ocracoke Community Center. During the first half of 1942, war raged off the shores of North Carolina. Today, remnants of four German U-boats, along with several Allied war ships and scores of merchant vessels dot the waters of coastal North Carolina and offer a glimpse into that portion of our nation's history. Lauren Heesemann, from NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, will present findings from a five-year research project at the sanctuary. The program is free and will last approximately 1 hour. Heesemann is the Research Coordinator for NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary. She has been with NOAA's Monitor National Marine Sanctuary for three years and has had the opportunity to work on multiple archaeological and biological research projects, participate in various educational activities, and play an active role in policy and management of the sanctuary. The Know Your Park citizen science program series is designed to further connect the Outer Banks communities and residents with the rich natural world and cultural heritage of their neighboring National Park sites; Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Wright Brothers National Memorial and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.For more information, call park headquarters at 252-473-2111. -NPS- |
