Superintendent Mike Murray announced today the delayed opening of Cape Point Campground for the 2008 season due to health and safety concerns as a result of standing water and saturated ground conditions.
NPS Public Health Specialist, Greg Robinson, inspected and evaluated the Cape Point Campground on Monday, May 19, 2008 and found one quarter of the campground with water standing on the surface. The remaining portions of the campground are highly saturated with water rising to the surface with each step. At the current ground saturation levels, effluent from the raised septic drainfields would migrate horizontally to campsite and walkways with relative ease. The poor drainage of drainfield effluent could cause potential health risks for the general public. The decision was made to leave the campground closed to visitors until the current groundwater levels drop. Park staff will re-evaluate the situation on a weekly basis and the campground will open for the 2008 season as soon as environmental conditions allow.
