The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse will be closed for climbing on September 6 for one day only to complete the installation of the first of seven new cast ductile iron windows. This first window is a prototype window to verify proper fit. Once proper fit is established, then the remaining six windows will be fabricated and installed after the lighthouse closes for the 2006 season in October. The new windows will restore the original historic look to the lighthouse and will operate more effectively, provide better ventilation, and wind resistance. Garcia Forest Service, LLC, an NPS contractor, anticipates the one day closure will be sufficient time to complete the work. |
