Superintendent Mike Murray announced today that Bodie Island Spit reopened to off-road vehicle (ORV) access. The reopening of 0.5 of a mile of shoreline provides access to Oregon Inlet, a prime fall fishing area within Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The ocean shoreline is open from Ramp 4 south for 2.1 miles to Oregon Inlet and from Ramp 4 north for 2.1 miles.

The pre-nesting closure, established in late March of 2008 and includes interior sections of the point, will transition to the non-breeding winter resource protection area status and is posted accordingly with signs and symbolic fencing. This area is closed to vehicles, pedestrian and all pets. The shoreline is now open to ORV traffic from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm daily. The nighttime prohibition on beach driving is still in effect throughout the Seashore from 10:00 pm until 6 am.

Temporary resource protection areas are established to protect threatened and endangered species, including piping plovers and sea turtles, and for species of concern, including American oystercatchers and colonial waterbirds (terns and black skimmers). For more information, call 252-473-2111 ext. 148.
