On September 18 and 19, 2016, Cape Hatteras National Seashore will celebrate Deaf Awareness Week by hosting deaf awareness educational programs presented by North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. Outer Banks Group Superintendent David Hallac invites the public to participate in these events to learn about the issues the deaf population faces every day to honor its history and culture. All events are free of charge.

Deaf Awareness programs on the National Seashore will include:

  • September 18 at Bodie Island Lighthouse

  • September 19 at Cape Hatteras Lighthouse

From 10:00 am until 2:00 pm an information table will describe state services available to individuals who are deaf, deaf-blind, and hard of hearing.

A presentation on sign language education will be offered by Stephanie Scott, Deaf Services Specialist, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm.

National Parks are public lands managed by the National Park Service. They offer experiences and educational opportunities for all to enjoy. Come celebrate the nation’s diversity with the National Park Service.
