A Peek at What’s Inside the See Life Traveling Trunk

December 07, 2017 Posted by: McKenna Pace

Did you know that we offer our tidepools in a box that you can check out for your classroom? The See Life Trunk is designed to help students experience the vast biodiversity of earth’s marine ecosystems from the comfort of their classroom. The trunk brings to life the meaning of biodiversity in the ocean, its role in the maintenance and function of healthy marine ecosystems, and what students can do to help protect this environment into the future. These trunks are available for teachers to use for up to two weeks at a time, and are free of cost. Check out what’s inside!

The educational contents of Cabrillo’s See Life Traveling TrunkNPS/McKenna Pace

  1. DVDs (5): Introduce your classroom to marine ecosystems through these short videos. Each trunk includes the following DVDs: Bill Nye the Science Guy: Ocean Life, Eyewitness Life, Eyewitness Seashore, Eyewitness Ocean, and Cabrillo National Monument’s On the Edge of Land and Sea. Follow along with any of the DVDs with a provided “Marine Bio-Bingo” activity.
  2. Teacher Packet Binder: Each trunk includes a binder full of background information, detailed lesson plans, beyond-the-classroom activities, and any worksheets teachers may need to complete the activities.
  3. Sea Sampler: This activity allows students to become intertidal scientists by examining real photos of the intertidal zone and using the same methods scientists use in the field. Each trunk comes with 2 quadrats (PVC-pipe squares), 3 different canvas photos, and student worksheets to record data.
  4. Books (6): Read some of the many stories the ocean has to tell through these fun picture books. Each trunk includes: In One Tidepool: Crabs, Snails and Salty Tails, SEASHORE (One Small Square series), CORAL REEFS (One Small Square series), The Secrets of Kelp Forests, The Secrets of the Tide Pools, and Shells of San Diego.
  5. See Life Photographs (10): The work of San Diego photographer Michael Ready captures rarely-seen marine organisms in amazing detail. These photos help students learn how animals are adapted to their environment.
  6. Guess Who – Intertidal: In pairs or teams, students play a Cabrillo Intertidal version of the classic board game, where the object of the game is to guess what species the other person has. This game was created using 24 clothespin pieces attached to a metal divider.
  7. Who Am I? Cards (11): Students can test their knowledge, quiz each other, and learn more using these quick and easy activity cards.
  8. Creature Feature (33): These posters highlight some of the common plants and animals found in the Cabrillo National Monument tidepools. Students can use them to simply learn more about these organisms, to nature journal in the classroom, and help them identify species.
  9. Patterns in Nature Cards (46): With each card depicting a different pattern seen in nature, students use these cards to think critically about why patterns exist and how they relate to one another.
  10. 3D Biomodels (5): Highlighting a unique fusion of nature and technology, 3D biomodels are an excellent way for students to examine real animals up close.
