CHARLESTOWN, MA – The National Park Service is making improvements to the Bunker Hill Monument grounds, repairing the granite stairs, historic fence, and restoring the electrical system in the Bunker Hill Lodge. Funded through the agency's Cyclic Maintenance program, this $1.2 Million investment will ensure that the historic landscape will be restored and safe for visitors and residents to enjoy.

During the period of repair, visitors and local community members can expect some disturbance in the flow of foot traffic up to the monument. Starting in mid-September, two sets of stairs will be closed at one time. Directional signage will guide visitors to open stairs and around the area of construction. The National Park Service does not anticipate any noise or vehicular traffic issues for the local community. All work will be complete by December 2021.

"As we prepare for the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bunker Hill in 2025 and the founding of our nation in 2026, Boston National Historical Park is investing in significant sites throughout Boston that allow visitors from around the world to around the corner experience these historic places," said National Park Service Superintendent, Michael Creasey.

"The Bunker Hill Monument and grounds are symbolic reminders of the role that Charlestown played in the fight for independence," said Julie Hall, President of Charlestown Historical Society and Board Member of Bunker Hill Monument Association. "The monument stands tall today, bringing pride to generations of Charlestown residents, as a symbol of family, strength, and fortitude."

The Bunker Hill Monument, located along Boston's Freedom Trail®, commemorates the site of the Battle of Bunker Hill, which marked a turning point in the American Revolutionary War. Bunker Hill Monument is part of Boston National Historical Park. For more information or to see the view from the monument at home, visit www.nps.gov/bost.
