April 2, 2024 - 11:00 a.m. Update – The 12.6-acre fire reported near Peaks of Otter on Sunday, March 31, 2024, is now 100% contained and out, power lines in the area restored, and trails are open. Out of an abundance of caution, fire crews will monitor the site for the next two days.
March 31, 2024 - 5:00 p.m. Update –Crews have worked the burn area throughout the day, bringing containment of the 12.6-acre fire to nearly 100% complete. Fire crews will continue to monitor the area, and trails will remain closed through tomorrow, April 1, 2024, to allow power company personnel access to the area for needed repairs.
Bedford, VA – At approximately 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, firefighters responded to reports of a wildfire near the Peaks of Otter area on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The fire is currently estimated to be 14 acres in size and 50% contained. Firefighters have secured a line around the fire and will continue working throughout the day.
No structures or properties are threatened. The National Park Service is prioritizing employee, firefighter and public safety and, as a result, have closed the following trails in the area:
- Elk Run trail,
- Harkening Hill trail, and
- Johnson Farm Loop Road trail.
Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire to be a downed power line. Approximately 30 personnel are assigned to manage the fire including resources from the National Park Service, United States Forest Service, and Beford Fire Department.
