Recent rains have moderated fire danger in the Gunnison and Montrose areas, therefore, effective Thursday, July 30 the National Park Service is lifting fire restrictions for Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and Curecanti National Recreation Area.
Visitors are reminded that they must continue to practice fire safety:
* Keep campfires small and under control. Fires must be in designated fire grates. Small beach fires are permitted only on the shores of Blue Mesa Reservoir, below the high water mark.
* Ensure that campfires are dead out. If it is hot to the touch, it’s too hot to leave.
* Be prepared. Have shovel and water nearby and ready to douse escaped sparks and embers.
* Park only in designated areas, not in grass or brush.
* Do not allow chains to drag from vehicles or towed trailers.
* Fireworks are never allowed on federal lands.
Fire restrictions may be revisited should drying trends make it advisable. Please stay informed by following park websites at nps.gov/blca and nps.gov/cure. For more information on Colorado’s Western Slope fire conditions, please visit the West Slope Fire Information website.
