Big Bend National Park is working on Old Maverick Road for much needed improvements
beginning April 3 and continuing through the summer months. Old Maverick Road is a gravel road on the west side of the park between Maverick Junction and the Santa Elena Canyon area.

The work will focus on five miles of the road between the Chimneys Trailhead and the Terlingua Abajo access road. The repairs will include laying down road base, grading, and adding gravel. When traveling this road, please watch for heavy equipment and rock trucks. Use caution when entering the work zone.

“This work is to prevent the erosion issues we have on Old Maverick Road,” said Linda
Richards, Chief of Facilities Management. “When we’re finished with these improvements, it will greatly improve accessibility for our visitors to this area of the park.”

Big Bend National Park’s employees strive to provide the very best visitor experience, to protect the park’s resources, and to provide access to the park’s recreational, cultural, and natural resources. Visitors are encouraged to call the park if they have questions about the status of any park facility or area.
