Availability of Environment Assessment for Assessing Need for a Backcountry Cabin in Managing the Chisos Mountains, Big Bend National Park

The National Park Service (NPS) is considering its options for managing the highly visited Chisos Mountains backcountry.

An Environmental Assessment (EA) has been prepared in compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to provide the decision-making framework that 1) analyzes four alternatives, including a no action alternative, 2) evaluates potential issues and impacts to Big Bend National Park’s resources and values, and 3) identifies mitigation measures to lessen the degree or extent of these impacts. As discussed in the EA, the park’s Preferred Alternative is to replace Boot Cabin and corral with a cabin and corral that would be built at the Colima site, out of view of any existing trail.

The EA is available for public review from February 18, 2014 to March 21, 2014. Comments must be received by March 21, 2014 to be included in the final record. The EA can be viewed online, and comments submitted online, at: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/bibe
