General Climate

Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site is in the High Plains, a subregion of the Great Plains, characterized by high elevation, steady winds, and a semiarid climate. Temperatures and conditions can be extreme in this region, with hot and dry summers that include occasional thunderstorms and tornadoes, as well as cold and snowy winters.
